8 ways SharePoint 2010 can help internal communications

Nice summary of some of the ways SharePoint can help internal communications.  I added this comment:

“We use most of the above on our SharePoint 2010 though the polls/survey feature is a bit weak in look & feel as are the discussion forums. Hopefully the next version of SP will improve surveys, blogs and the discussion functionality. We use comment web parts on many of our news stories as well which does work well and allows people to ask questions or give feedback.”

Digital workplace: “The future of work?”

Top Australian intranet consultant, James Robertson, has an excellent article on the digital workplace and how it’s going to evolve over the next few years.

James indentifies six keys for the digital workplace:

  1. identity
  2. awareness
  3. trust
  4. access
  5. design
  6. value

 I added this comment:

“The last one, value, though, is from a business/stakeholder perspective, the most critical. We have to be able to measure the impact and value of what the digital workplace can do. Metrics that senior managers can understand have to be front and centre. Otherwise it will just be a shiny IT and Communications toy.”     »» Continue reading

Content marketing and intranets

How’s this quote: “Intranets are unique providers of content. Although the audience is captive, the content still needs to engage the readers so the site becomes a useful and vibrant center of a company’s internal community.”

This is from a nice article: How to Develop an Internal Content Marketing Plan by Leveraging Intranets. So in other words, using the ideas of good content marketing that are used on public web sites for intranets and employee sites.

Spot on.

Good content is good content. Regardless of where it is or who it is aimed at. Unfortunately though intranets can be a dumping ground within companies for content that is just there for the sake of it or to tick a box.     »» Continue reading

10 Best Intranets of 2012

Web usability guru, Jakob Nielsen has issued his annual intranet design awards recently and interesting reading it makes too. Here’s the very quick summary: “Social networking and personalization rise to higher levels this year, while mobile intranets continue to cut their teeth. Also, smaller organizations get larger teams and better designs.”

The top intranets are mostly UK and US along with Swedish and German winners. I like this quote from the main summary which places an emphasis on having good publishers in a company:

“This year’s winners were very strongly focused on content quality early on and throughout the design process.     »» Continue reading

Intranets by another name – digital workplace

The word ‘intranet’ has been around awhile now. It’s an internal web site for a company mainly for it’s employees. Leading intranet expert, Jane McConnell has coined a phrase over the past year or so that she thinks describes an intranet. And ‘digital workplace’ it is. I like it.

She and her company have produced a report on the trends for digital workplaces.

Here is the summary: “Based on an annual worldwide survey now in its 6th year, the  annual Intranet-Digital Workplace Trends reports provide in-depth insight into what is happening in the “intranet world” inside organizations.”

And here is part of the preface: “2012 will be the year of expansion for the intranet.     »» Continue reading
